Audible & Kindle Unlimited, checked against the source
What these subscriptions cost, and when to skip them
We read the terms, check them against Amazon's own pages, print the date we checked, and do the arithmetic on whether a subscription actually beats buying the books. Sometimes the answer is your library card.

A claim we will not make
Audiobooks we claim to have personally listened to before recommending a subscription: none.
Everyone in this category implies they have heard everything. We have not, and we say so.
So why trust us
Because of what we do instead. We read the actual program terms, check them against Amazon's and Audible's own pages, print the date of every check, publish what we could not verify rather than filling the gap, and show the arithmetic on whether a subscription beats just buying the books. The full method is here.

The surrounding questions: what Prime actually includes, where free audiobooks really come from, where to start.
Read these first
Four pages that carry the argument. Two of them regularly conclude that you should not buy anything.

Audible vs Kindle Unlimited
They are separate subscriptions with separate catalogs and separate fees. Holding one gives you nothing on the other, and mixing them up is the most expensive mistake in this category.

Is Audible worth it?
It depends on one number: how many audiobooks you actually finish in a month. Below that number, you are paying for a habit you do not have.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?
Two questions decide it, and most articles only answer one. Is what you read in the catalog, and do you read enough of it to clear the monthly fee?

Audible vs Libby
Libby is free and we earn nothing from it. For a lot of readers it is still the right answer, and this page says so.

How this site is funded
Shelf & Sound takes part in the Amazon Associates program. If you start a qualifying free trial through one of our links, we are paid a flat fee for that signup. It costs you nothing extra.
We are not paid by Libby, by any library, or by any of the other services we compare — we have joined none of their programs, and we recommend them anyway where they are the better answer. That is the whole reason the recommendations are worth reading.
